Jay Johnston is a master of slapstick physical comedy. He demonstrated his keen sense of comic timing as a writer for the HBO sketch comedy series "Mr. Show with Bob and David." He later joined many of the cast members for that show again on Comedy Central's "The Sarah Silverman Program," on which he elicited laughs as the recurring character Officer Jay McPherson. He reunited with Dino Stamatopoulos and Scott Adsit, other veterans of "Mr. Show with Bob and David," when he went to work as a producer and writer on the Adult Swim series "Moral Orel," which parodied religion (and religious-themed shows) with the tale of a youth who remains defiantly optimistic in the face of a world rife with pessimists. Johnston's work on "Moral Orel" was daring and controversial, offering a kind of over-the-top "Candide" (Voltaire's masterpiece takedown of institutionalized religion) re-tooled for the modern masses.
